retro beginnings + the march edit
Growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s as a child, things were much different to say the least. Starting over isn’t easy but sometimes much needed for the soul. That is why I have created Terrace Studio, to live and work around ideas, people, projects and product I love. I think this “starting over” somehow morphed into a somewhat retro vibe for some of our first offerings in product.
When I saw the silk/velvet butterfly and graphic pillow covers we are opening with on our site, I immediately got swept back to the early days that now are considered vintage. The butterfly reminds me of the late 70s when everything was brown and we had a jute macrame owl on the wall. This, along with the graphic pillow cover also takes me back to one of my favorite hotels, the Parker Palm Springs.
I’ve always been a fan of the wooden cars we are carrying and specially love the retro vibe of some of them. Does anyone remember the Dukes of Hazard? This GT-10 is giving those vibes big time.
As far as the one-off pool, one of my main goals in life is to have a private pool. Our current situation doesn’t allow for that so until then, we will settle for the checkerboard pool on our site. I loved the idea of an inflatable pool that wasn’t primary colors with cartoon fish on it. A plus is that these are designed by a local [Seattle] designer/stylist.
I’ve always been a magazine whore. My mom started getting me magazine subscriptions when I turned 13 and that started me off on the path that would lead me to here today. Years of editorials and fantasizing of the world beyond the small Oklahoma town I grew up in, I owe to the good old fashion flip through magazine. No internet access in those days. When I worked in a book and music store in college, this love quickly evolved into more artistic yet expensive publications. When I found this magazine, CATNIP it spoke to me, even though I’m more of a dog person, I have a lot of cat-loving friends and relatives. Also, first issues and volumes are so fun, and it put off that 70s vibe I was already feeling.
The canvas and leather bag collection are from an Australian designer. I like the simplicity of the designs and the contrasting insides and think these make some good graduation gifts for someone graduating high school. The clay is my top choice but always love a good army green classic olive color that never goes out of style.
Baby’s first hairbrush is inspired by a past job I had working on photoshoots and this adorable baby would always come in with his own hairbrush and this one is so soft and paired with some other things in our baby gifting basics category, it makes a great little gift.
Until next post, happy shopping, traveling, living and experiencing life!
